A few weeks later, in the afternoon, Wendy and Jim sat in her car and stared at a rusty, shabby trailer with tires on the roof, and waist high weeds in the yard. The other trailers in the park were almost as run down. White or black, this was a bad neighborhood to be in.

Wendy rubbed Jim on the arm and smiled. She knew he was anxious, but she knew he had to go through with this.

Jim loosened his tie. His Security Guard uniform was always uncomfortable in more ways than one.

Wendy saw sweat glistening from his forehead. "Don't be nervous."

"I'm more nervous about this than I was hunting snipers." Jim tried to smile but it didn't take.

"You saved his life. He'll be glad to see you."

"We didn't part on good terms." Jim's face revealed the freshness of the haunting memory.

"Relax. You'll have a nice, pleasant, low-key visit."

Jim's eyebrows were knitted in anxiety. "What if things get weird?"

"You're in your uniform. Tell him you have to get to work."

"What about you? If I get sucked into a long-ass conversation?"

Wendy pulled out her laptop. "I've got plenty to keep me busy. I need to do some bookkeeping for the restaurant."

Jim nodded his head and took a deep breath. His restless leg betrayed his futile effort to relax.

"Quit stalling Jim." Wendy put her hand on his leg. "You can do this."

Jim managed a strained smile. He kissed Wendy on the cheek. Then, he looked in the mirror and straightened his tie. "Showtime."

Wendy watched Jim walk through the weeds and up the rickety wooden steps.

Jim banged on the screen door and then walked in.
